Top Four Things to Do for Self-Care As an Entrepreneur

Self-care is the topic of a lot of conversation these days. People seem to drain themselves because everyone is on overdrive. I know I am one of those people; I am always on overdrive. Being a single mother and entrepreneur means there are still a million things to do. At the end of the day, we need to take care of ourselves to be successful and get the most out of the time.

Self-care gives you the time to clear your mind so that you can step back, reflect, and reorganize. This action is how I get my creativity and focus back. It does not have to be anything extravagant or even take a lot of time, but a few little steps can help you for sure.

Here are the top four things I do for self-care:

  1. TAKE A MIDDAY OR EVENING WALK.: I sit at the computer desk a lot; I sit a lot, period. I need to get my blood flowing, so taking a midday walk can really be helpful. Get the kids, the dog, whatever, and put your phone away and just go for a walk. Take a deep breath and enjoy the scenery around you. It has been so great for my son and me to enjoy this activity.
  2. PREP HEALTHY MEALS: Self-care isn’t always meditating, working out, or getting massages. Sometimes it’s as easy as setting up small ways to care for yourself. As a mother, I am always on the go. If we plan with our meals, we will actually eat and not let ourselves get hangry. Am I right, though? Like really, I know that when I don’t meal prep, I wonder what to eat. Then, I end up going out to get food and overeat because, by that time, I am starving!
  3. UNPLUG FOR 30 MINUTES: I know, I know. I get it. Literally, I have to unwind. This tip means 30 minutes by MYSELF. This time is nothing to do with my son, dogs, housework, etc. The phone and computer get put away. You can truly let your thoughts wander and have some time clearing your mind. You do not need to meditate per se but it is essential to do this step.
  4. BOOK YOURSELF A MASSAGE OR FACIAL: This act of self-care is the super dreamy one that everyone loves. It doesn’t need to happen as much as the other steps. I have learned how to do a facial at home, and it just makes so much of a difference. I can get a new feeling and cool off my face.

slefcare

To be the best mom and business owner you can be, you must unplug and recharge. I honestly have time blocked off in my calendar so that I take care of these items and myself. It is okay to block this time off AND COMMIT TO IT. What does self-care look like for you?

Seven Ways Independence Helps Your Business

When you own a business, you have to be very independent. This happens because you need to be very focused and detail oriented. You are in charge and must be able to plan and overcome whatever business might throw at you. I have learned and grown so much in the years of owning my business.

1. Diversify Your Client List

Find 2-3 reliable clients, and keep a few on the radar. These people pay the bills and then some. You don’t want to overbook clients, but rather make sure you can fulfill or outsource before taking on anyone else.

2. Get a Backup Vendor

I always make sure to have a list of connections. I have a backup for backups. This measure is just because life happens, and sometimes someone might not be able to fulfill. Keep a list going so you can provide at all times.

3. Don’t Put All Your Marketing Eggs in One Basket

This precaution is one of the biggest things that I tell my clients day in and day out. You can’t just be solely on social media anymore. You also need to be doing in-person networking and print media. What if social media or the internet doesn’t work tomorrow? You have to rely on other sources.

4. Get Firm in Your Payment Terms

Many times, I have gotten burned. I got burned because I didn’t have contracts in place. I wasn’t specific with payment options. I LOVE Dubsado (enter link) for that reason alone. It keeps me on track and has all the information I need in one place.

5. Be Less Available

Do not let customers know if you work all hours of the day. Set those boundaries and guidelines. I check my email from 10-11 every day, and that’s it. I make sure that people can text or call, but a response can take up to 24 hours.

6. Take Vacations

You need to take a vacation, and you should be able to without disruption. People shouldn’t be calling you and texting you. Have a team ready or accessible, or let them know. You also want to ensure that you don’t have a client list overload for this reason, unless you have a great team.

7. Open Your Mind

Always keep your mind open for opportunities. This tip is one of the biggest things that I can say. I realized first-hand that there are a million ways to connect with someone; it might not always lead to a sale.

You are in charge and have to be able to plan and overcome whatever business might throw at you. I have learned and grown so much in the years of owning my business.

Three Things Successful Women Never Do

I feel that women are often put down, especially business owners. People do not think that women can be successful for whatever reason. Or maybe they don’t like to see a woman living successfully. Honestly, I am not sure. What I do know is that I have grown over the years of being a business owner + have made changes in my life to become a successful woman. Here are some mistakes that I have learned and seen along the way of what successful women never do:

Successful Women Never Ignore Their Fears: Being a business owner means you deal with a lot of fears and self-doubt. I can’t tell you how many times I was so scared of my business. I kept trying to find ways to get out of my business and trying to talk myself out of it, but instead, my business coach gave me pep talks day in and day out. It is critical to have a tribe for times like these.

Successful Women Never Look At Their Past As A Mistake: I do not have any regrets in life – none. That is right, no regrets at all. Everything has led me to where I am today. It was a stepping stone to get there, and I needed to make all of these ‘mistakes’ to be successful. I have learned along the way and know how to analyze information before implementing.

Successful Women Never Miss Opportunities To Shine: There have been so many times, that I could have passed up times to shine. Presentations and speaking gigs are the first ones that come to mind. Now, I can talk in person or online much better. I am special, worthy, and know that I can shine. I had to put the fear and doubt past me for my business mindset.

People do not think that women can be successful for whatever reason. Or maybe they don’t like to see a woman being successful. Honestly, I am not sure. What I do know is that I have grown over the years of being a business owner + have made changes in my life to become a successful woman.

What’s Holding You Back? In Business Life..

We all face obstacles in life and experience some sort of negativity that brings us down. The other day, I started to think about being successful and what was really holding me back? What does “successful” even mean? What is holding you back from being successful?

Here are my thoughts about what held me back at one time:

  1. Time: There is never enough time. We can plan for things, but there will always be something else. How do I get work done when my son is sick? How do I get the floors cleaned when I have a deadline? How do I manage time for my client work? I use Trello as a way to track my time.
  2. Money: How many times have you said, “if only I had more money, I would do this.” Stop it. Either take a risk or wait, but the timing will never be right. Especially as a business owner.
  3. Clients: I’m not going to take on new clients that don’t pay me well. Truth bomb, you have to build them up. My clients haven’t happened because they started on thousand dollar contracts; no. It’s more along the lines of strategizing first. I have a great on board system and set up automation.
  4. Overworked, underpaid – FIX IT:I will not cut myself short anymore, and I will make sure to charge what I need. I have to pay taxes, software, and so much more, so I need to make sure that I actually make a profit.

Successful is… being able to make changes and adapt. It’s being able to look forward and make the changes you need to make as a person. So many times, people think of success as having tons of money. While yes, that might be true, there is more to it than that. Manage your time better. STOP doing tasks that aren’t making money or can be pushed back for now.

How To Stay Motivated When You Work From Home

I have been working for myself officially now for almost two years. During that time, I have realized that I needed to have a ton of control in my life to be successful. People tell me all the dang time, “it must be nice to work from home” or, “I wish I could work from home” or even, “I couldn’t work from home.”

I like to think that I have always been well-disciplined and can get items done that need to be done. Being an entrepreneur has its perks. Even with kids running around, cooking dinner, and doing everything in between, I am still able to get motivated and focused.

  1. SHARE GOALS AND PLANS WITH FRIENDS: I know there will be times when we all want to slack off. There are days where I go to the spa instead of working, but it is because I know that I can pick up when I get back. I am part of a mastermind, and also have a sales coach; both of these seem to help me stay accountable. Furthermore, my parents are always by my side when it comes to running my business. I keep them informed and allow them to know my business goals and plans.
  2. THINK BIG PICTURE: Your mind is going to wander, so get that straight. From writing to social media to photo editing to networking, your list will go on forever. You will want to tackle bits daily, but you need to know that you are in charge. Focusing on the end game is much more motivating than seeing each task as an individual chore. Find a way to see the big picture and the end game that you want, and what the steps are that you need to make to get there. Too often I find myself seeing the end of the results for my business but unsure how to get there, so I make a plan. I draw a huge plan and write it out on my whiteboard + make sure to have it visualized in front of my desk daily. This process helps me to stay focused and reach that goal.
  3. CELEBRATE LITTLE MILESTONES: You cannot get to the end game or the big picture unless you celebrate every little milestone and learn from the past. I will tell you that I had to do both; it is just the nature of the game and being an entrepreneur. I have learned that EVERY single small milestone matters. Sending out that email, knocking off the emails, whatever it is, it matters.

The truth is working from home is great; I don’t mind it at all. I am very well-disciplined and can manage my time and see the big picture of where I see myself, and my business. Tell me, what do you need help with working from home?

What is an entrepreneur?

We live in a generation where everyone wants to be a business owner, or an entrepreneur. It takes a lot of time and dedication. It never happens over night regardless of what their sales funnel says. I feel like people throw around this word entrepreneur too much. It is one of those words that people just say it and have no clue what it means. People say it when they have a ton of businesses, but non are successful.

Here’s some thoughts for you to ingest:

Entrepreneur is a mindset, or a way of thinking; Entrepreneurs just think and do things differently.  They have real streams of income and are always looking for new opportunities.  It means that they know their industry inside out, and use that to exploit  to create new opportunities.  Being an entrepreneur can mean knowing the failures and growth that happens each day.  There are so many opportunities out there for people to start their own business and be successful. If you ask someone what it means, you are going to get a different answer each time. I encourage you to do this, so that you can understand it from a different perspective.

Here are some ideas that entrepreneurs have:

1.  Think ahead – Where do you want to be in  five to ten years?   Entrepreneurs are good at thinking and try to have a vision of the future.  They find ways to achieve those goals and put things into action. They are always two steps ahead of someone else, because they see the growth.

2. Working across disciplines – Think about the picture and the impact. Entrepreneurs see opportunities in many different ways and in ways that others might not see it.  The best part though is that they are able to implement it in order to achieve those future goals.

3. Develop transferrable skills – Think about the skills you have and how you can use them daily and differently. Entrepreneurs are very diverse; they are the developer, marketer, salesman and accountant for their idea/service. They know that before they can scale they need to do it their self.

4. Meeting people – Growing a network is critical. A business will not be successful if there is no network, thus no sales.  Just by meeting people and networking you can get sales, collaborations, friendships, and referrals. Never turn someone away or burn a bridge just because you never know.

5. Be in Charge  – Entrepreneurs are generally agile and adaptable. They work around issues and find ways to improve and make things better.  They know when it is time to hire out or let go and make changes. They are constantly evaluating things, to make sure that they are getting a bam for their buck!

6. Take a risk – Taking a risk is the single most important thing any entrepreneur needs to do.  If you do not take a risk, then you aren’t going to move forward. I remember when I hired my sales coach is was a huge risk and a huge investment but I realized it was well worth it.

There are so many traits to being an entrepreneur. It is more than having one business, or two, it’s having the traits to carry out and be successful. I am sure you all have heard the saying have ‘multiple streams of income.’ The only way you can do this though is if one is successful first.
