Top 8 Ways to Save on Your Electric Bill

The winter months can be tough to pinch pennies; I get it. But, know that there are some great tips for you to save money by merely reducing some simple electricity draining activities.

Here are great ways to save money this winter:

  1. Replace Incandescent Light Bulbs With LEDs LEDs are much more energy efficient. These bulbs will not only save more power, but they’ll also last longer. Check out these LED bulbs.
  2. Unplug Electronics After Use. You might not be charging your phone, etc., but the chargers could still be drawing energy at home. Try using a smart power strip that shuts off the current when the electronics are not in use.
  3. Use Cold Water For Laundry. Using hot water will consume more electricity simply because the water heater will need to run. You can merely try not to use super hot water, but something that isn’t too cold either.
  4. Take Shorter Showers. By taking shorter showers, it will reduce how much water you use, which will limit the amount of time that your electric water heater needs. Sounds simple enough, right? Just use a timer and take a shorter shower.
  5. Energy Efficient Showerhead. You can save 2,000+ gallons of water every year by using a more efficient showerhead. This measure will save you tons of money on your electric bill, for sure.
  6. Adjust Your Thermostat. We keep our thermostat at a certain temperature and keep it there all winter long. We do not touch it unless absolutely necessary.
  7. Use Solar Lights Outside. We love having these lights outside. They’re relatively cheap and don’t need energy due to being solar powered, so it’s a win-win!
  8. Motion Sensors. All of our outside lights have these detectors, etc. Motion sensors can significantly help you when someone might forget to turn off the lights.

These suggestions are just some simple tricks that we have done to reduce our electric bill in the winter time. They have really and truly helped us. What have you done that has cut your electric bill?

Spring Cleaning in Winter

Even though it is winter time and it is hard to focus on the fact that spring is around the corner, you need to start. Plan now rather than trying to do it all later. What do I mean?

Begin creating your spring cleaning list NOW rather than waiting.

  1. Wipe Walls and Ceilings: This task can be hard and not done often. You can clean by using a vacuum to remove dust. Tackle stubborn surface grime with this cleaner
  2. Clean Rugs: You can wash your rugs, and carpet, using this deep-cleaner with a rotary shampoo machine. It is easy to use and is super affordable one to two times a year.
  3. Dust Shelves: You will want to take everything off the shelves. Brush shelves and books with a feather duster. Wipe this off accordingly, and you have clean shelving.
  4. Clean Upholstered Furnishings: Go ahead and take cushions outside and gently air clean them by brushing them off. You will want to vacuum the couches, chairs, etc., anything that is not on the cushions.
  5. Wash Window Screens: Windows can be difficult to cleanse. Clean the windows by using warm water and a mild dishwashing liquid on the glass. Then, the screens by scrubbing each with a brush. Seems simple enough. Clean Window Treatments: Read the labels on any curtains or drapery, and freshen-up accordingly.

There are so many spots to clean in your house, especially once a year. This preparation can honestly help your home get back on track and wash all the winter yuck out. There is nothing worse than having dust and germs living in your house. You only need to do take these steps once or twice a year, and it will be fine!

5 Ways To Prep For Winter

By now, many of us are starting to experience the winter months. Sigh. Couldn’t it just stay fall or summer all year? I wish. Whenever winter comes, we have to prep to be ready for it. We can get stuck in blizzards or snowed in indoors.

Here are 5 ways to prep for winter.

  • Insulate Pipes and Spigots: Older homes need this step. If you lose power a lot too, you will want to take care of these items. You do not want your pipes to burst; It isn’t any fun at all. TRUST ME. Save time and money by handling this bit before it’s too late.
  • Stock Up on Fuel and Have a Backup for Heat: If you have a fireplace, you will want to stock up on wood now. Also, check that the fireplace works and is cleaned before the winter storms come rolling in. If you do not have a fireplace, now is the time to think of another option, such as a generator. We actually have BOTH (fireplace and a generator) just because we always like to be prepared for any instance.
  • Add a Coat and Create an Emergency Kit: This is one of the most important steps, I think, personally. Make sure that you have coats, blankets, socks, gloves, extra clothes, etc. in your car at all times. You never know when you’ll need them, especially if you live in areas where you always get winter storms. OR better yet, what if your car breaks down and there isn’t even a winter storm? You will be ready. Here is an emergency kit to consider, too.
  • Get Chimneys and Furnaces Cleaned: Be careful how you place your heaters, candles, etc. as you do not want to start a fire. Turn electronics and such off when you aren’t home, and teach the kids the importance of this, too.
  • Snow Tires and Car Prep: You want to take care of your car kit before the winter storms come.  Be sure to have everything up to date with your mode of transportation. If you do not know, take it into a shop so they will check it all out for you.

I also like to keep water in my car as well as any necessities (I keep overnight bags just in case). You guys, we get crazy winters here, and I always like to be prepared. What are some items that you keep in your car during the winter months?
